: Maybe, I bet that's it actually.
I bet you're both really really wrong, he can fucking wail like the best of them, he wanted "Abulum" to sound very simple, very low key, thus, the recordings were done live in the room with floor monitors, no headphones and as little overdubs as possible (except "Back On My Feet" and "It Takes Time" which are remixed versions of the demos)
he wanted the CD to sound like it could have been recorded at any point between 1970 and 2000, he didn't want it flashy, like it "My Own Town" he gave it more of a low whispery voice, when he does it live, he sings it higher in his regular voice, his new album shou,d be more of what we'd hear from toad vocally, based off of what he does live now (the new songs, etc....)
material like "Chapel Perilous", "Easier", "Sake Of The World" show of Glen's just as good, and in my opinion, better than he was vocally 4 years ago on "Coil"
listen to silo lullaby live, he kicks it's ass, he's by far just as strong vocally, and in my opinion, his range is bigger these days, especially his falsetto work, he also sings really stark and deep on tracks like "Nothing Left" and "Marigolds"
he has not lost any vocal power, go download the demos of the "Abulum" material, more rock oriented, so the vocals are a bit bigger and more toadlike, being unhappy with the "glen phillips from toad" moniker, he went against making a toad-ish record (watch his DVD interview, he didn't want to remotely sound like he did in toad, thus the reason toad-ish songs like "Darkest Hour" and "Professional Victim" got a new makeover on "Abulum" sounding quieter and more inward
