I know I've mentioned them a thousand times before... but hey, it never hurts to try just again. (c:
I am currently in LOVE with this band from Cincinnati, called Oval Opus. I saw them for the first time in May of this year, and
since then, I have seen them a total of *12* times. Up until this coming week, I've lived two hours away from them, and have
driving up nearly faithfully to see them perform. I also work for them as their webpage mistress, because I believe in them as
artists.
So why oh why do I mention all this here??
Because I'm making a plea for ALL Lapdog fans, who are craving new and exciting music & artists, to check them out. Toad is
one of their influences, as well as Freddy Jones Band, Counting Crows, The Refreshments, Train, etc etc.
What do they sound like?
All of the above and more so. Their songs are catchy, some are poppy, some are slow, and some are very fast. Their earlier
stuff is kinda reminiscent of Jars of Clay (and while I am not a Christian music fan at ALL.. I adore JoC), while they've since
branched off into some louder, more dancable, less god-filled tunes. They cover songs like "All Along the Watchtower," Sister
Hazel's "Happy," Better Than Ezra's "This Time of Year," and the list goes on.
But are they GOOD?
Do you think I would gush about something THIS much if they weren't. Each member of the band were trained and taught their
appropriate instrument for years. The lead singer, Aaron, has a powerful and intense voice. Not only that, but he plays the
tambourine, bongos, harmonica, guitar, maracas... not all at once, mind you. ;c) Each member of the band helps with
background vocals, and the songs, lyrically, are beautiful.
So why should you check them out?
Why NOT? Because of Toad fans, I *never* would have found the likes of Vertical Horizon, the Push Stars, Sarah
McLachlan, Summercamp, Dishwalla, and even my own Oval Opus. I trust the judgement and tastes of other Toad fans, and I
hope you trust mine.
SOOoo...
Check out their webpage: http://www.ovalopus.com , download some songs, and listen and love the *BEST* unsigned band
that's around today. When these boys get big, I'd hate to say "I told you..." ;c)
